Having celebrated her 100th birthday on June 30, 2016, Elsie Young might well be the oldest PERI member who routinely attends her chapter meetings in Highland County. Elsie’s public service began at the Highland District Hospital in housekeeping. She later worked for what was then called the “welfare department” as a driver and in the food stamp program.
Elsie had nine children with six still living and part of family activities. She was a leader in the Hillsboro African-American Community having helped integrate the Hillsboro Public Schools in 1957 by walking her children to the public school they were assigned to attend.
The other Highland County PERI members always look forward to seeing Elsie at meetings and other events around town. She is an inspiration to all who know her.
